Imagine an American economy with 8,300,000 fewer jobs. Imagine an American economy without $1.2 trillion in goods and services.

The damage would be massive. The impact would be felt in every community.

Imagine an America with fewer local post offices, perhaps your local post office. Imagine if mail deliveries were reduced to five days a week. Or four. Imagine if daily home deliveries were not made in rural areas — or in inner cities.

In the same way that something as mundane as streets and roads, bridges and dams, are essential to us all, the same is true of the mailstream.

We don’t think about it very much for the simple reason that the postal system has been in place for more than 200 years. We grew up with it. We say hello each day to our letter carrier. For most of us, our letter carrier in the only government official we see with any frequency.

This is a blog about the mailstream and its value. The idea is not that the mail system is perfect or cannot be improved; but rather that the Internet and all that goes with it would be far less valuable without an efficient and effective mail delivery system — the only system that can physically reach almost 150 million addresses and which today remains an important part of our economy.
